The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the alleged killing of a 50-year-old Nigerian, Jeremiah Okoye, while in police custody in South Africa.
Mr. Okoye, originally from Eziniffite Nnewi in Anambra State, reportedly died on January 13 while detained in Limpopo Province.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, NICASA President-General Frank Onyekwelu confirmed that investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances leading to Mr. Okoye’s death.
“We urge the police authorities to respect the rule of law while performing their duties,” Onyekwelu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Onyekwelu disclosed that Mr. Okoye had lived in South Africa for 22 years and resided at No. 71 Magazyn Street in Polokwane, Limpopo Province.
Following the incident, NICASA formally notified the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate in South Africa. The association has also contacted Mr. Okoye’s family and friends in Limpopo to provide support.
“Nigerians in South Africa reject police brutality and killings. We demand justice for the late Okoye. Our lives matter, and our nationality should not be treated as a crime,” Onyekwelu stated firmly.
He urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding while allowing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth about Mr. Okoye’s death.
Onyekwelu expressed deep concern over the increasing deaths of Nigerians in South African police custody, describing it as a troubling and recurring issue. He warned that if this trend continues unchecked, it could lead to a dangerous precedent.
