The Minister of Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to investigate the recent tanker explosion that occurred at Dikko Junction in Niger State. The tragic incident took place along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, claiming over 50 lives and leaving several others injured.

In a heartfelt message, the minister extended his condolences to the government and people of Niger State. He described the explosion as a devastating and heart-wrenching event that has left many families in mourning.

In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, Lokpobiri stressed the urgency of enhancing safety protocols to prevent such occurrences. He also urged the public to exercise caution around petrol-laden tankers, particularly during emergencies.

“While we continue to implement safety measures across the petroleum supply chain, I strongly urge citizens to avoid approaching petrol-laden tankers in the event of an accident. The risks are immense, and every life is invaluable,” the minister said.

Lokpobiri confirmed that the NMDPRA has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the explosion to uncover its cause and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. He emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe transportation of petroleum products nationwide.

“This incident underscores the vital role of collective responsibility. We must all, as government, transport operators, and citizens, prioritize safety in all aspects of petroleum distribution,” Lokpobiri stated.

He assured the people of Niger State that his ministry would provide full support during this difficult time. Furthermore, he reiterated his dedication to promoting safety and well-being in all petroleum-related activities.
