The Take It Back Movement (TIB) has expressed strong disapproval of recent remarks by the Nigerian Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, concerning the authority of police officers to enter private properties without a warrant.
The group has consequently called for Adejobi’s immediate resignation.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its National Coordinator, Sanyaolu Juwon, TIB described Adejobi’s comments as promoting a harmful narrative that legitimizes unwarranted police intrusion while ignoring the pressing issue of police brutality.
Chronicles Reporters previously reported that Adejobi, in a reaction to a controversial video, stated that police officers have the right to break into any property without a warrant if they suspect criminal activity.
The video, which has drawn widespread condemnation, shows masked and armed policemen in unprofessional attire scaling a fence, invading a property without a warrant, and firing shots to disperse people.
In response, TIB stated, “As a movement committed to defending human rights and ensuring good governance, we cannot condone such a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.
“The police exist to protect and serve the people, not to act as agents of oppression. The idea that officers can invade any property based on a vague suspicion of criminal activity creates a dangerous precedent for abuse of power and further damages public trust in law enforcement.”
The group further criticized Adejobi’s remarks on police dressing and appearance, calling it “a clear attempt to divert attention from the core issue: systemic abuse of power and the lack of accountability within the Nigerian police force.”
TIB also highlighted the silence of the Inspector General of Police on the matter, stating it reflects deeper problems within the institution.
“In view of this indefensible statement and the continued failure to address police misconduct, the Take It Back Movement demands the resignation of both Muyiwa Adejobi and the Inspector General of Police,” the group declared.
“As officials entrusted with upholding law and order, they must be held accountable for their actions. Their inability to maintain the integrity of the police force is no longer tolerable.”
TIB concluded by urging Nigerians, civil society organizations, and advocates for justice to join in condemning Adejobi’s comments and advocating for a comprehensive reform of the Nigerian police system.
“Only through collective effort can we establish a society that safeguards the rights of all citizens and ensures accountability among those in positions of authority,” the statement added.
