The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against any form of assault or killing of its officers, declaring that such acts will no longer be tolerated under any circumstances.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, delivered this message during his visit to the Enugu State Command on Friday. Speaking unequivocally, Egbetokun emphasized that the Force would respond decisively to any attack on its personnel.
“We will not tolerate any assault on our officers, let alone their killing. An assault on a policeman is a criminal act and a direct attack on the office of the Inspector-General. This will no longer be treated lightly,” he said.
The IGP further stated, “Wherever a policeman is killed, there must be a collective and appropriate response. We are drawing the line this year, 2025, against any form of violence or assault on our officers. It is a firm no from the Nigeria Police Force.”
Commitment to Officers’ Welfare
Egbetokun assured that the Force, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, is working tirelessly to improve the welfare of its officers. While he acknowledged that a few personnel have tarnished the Force’s image, he commended the Enugu State Command for their professionalism and dedication.
“I want to commend the officers and men of the Enugu State Command for their hard work and diligence. The governor has spoken highly of your efforts, and I am incredibly proud of your achievements. However, we are aware of a few bad eggs, and we will address that internally,” he stated.
Plans for 2025
The IGP outlined his vision for the year, emphasizing professionalism, ethical conduct, and the use of modern tools in policing. He pledged full support to the Enugu Command to ensure continued success in combating crime.
“In 2025, we are determined to stamp out criminals and prevent their return. We will provide you with the necessary resources and modern policing tools to carry out your duties effectively. Training and retraining of officers will also be prioritized, and your welfare remains a top priority,” he assured.
Dismissing Misinformation
Egbetokun also addressed recent misinformation about the Force, dismissing social media rumors designed to tarnish its reputation.
“I have seen posts suggesting that I advised the public to beat up officers who ask for their phones. This is nothing but the work of mischief makers. No IGP will ever neglect the welfare or integrity of his officers,” he clarified.
The IGP urged officers to remain focused and not be swayed by negative narratives.
