Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has accused President Bola Tinubu of overseeing a government that tramples on human rights worse than Nigeria’s former military regimes. Speaking during a broadcast on VOPTV, monitored by Chronicles Reporters on YouTube, Sowore expressed strong criticism of Tinubu’s administration, particularly its treatment of protesters and critics.

Sowore specifically denounced the imprisonment of children who participated in the #EndBadGovernance protests and other individuals who criticized government officials. He argued that such actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law and fundamental human rights.

“He (Tinubu) exhibits the same tendencies as military rulers. In fact, his actions are worse than what the military did. Jailing children after protests and arresting people for speaking against government officials mirrors the oppressive tactics of Decree 2 and Decree 4 during the military era,” Sowore said.

He emphasized that even during Nigeria’s military rule, children were not subjected to imprisonment. “The military did not jail children or charge them. This administration has taken repression to a new level,” he added.

Sowore also criticized the Tinubu government’s “Renewed Hope” slogan, describing it as misleading and reflective of the hardships Nigerians face under his leadership. Speaking in Pidgin, he said, “We must keep informing the people. They (Tinubu’s government) claim they brought renewed hope, but it’s hopelessness they’ve delivered. Before, it was hard to explain how bad things were, but now, your stomach will tell you how tough things have become.”

Sowore’s remarks align with the views of Prof. Usman Yusuf, a member of the Northern Elders Forum, who also condemned Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. Yusuf argued that the administration’s policies have only deepened poverty and despair among Nigerians.

According to Yusuf, instead of offering hope, Tinubu’s government has plunged Nigerians into greater destitution and hopelessness over the past year.
