
The Imo State Police Command has successfully neutralized two suspected members of a notorious armed robbery and kidnapping syndicate, rescuing four victims in the process. The operation took place on Saturday, January 4, 2025, following a distress call about the abduction of four individuals in Umuokanne, located in the Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area.
According to Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit acted swiftly on the information and located the criminals’ hideout. Upon arrival, a fierce gun battle ensued between the police and the kidnappers, resulting in the deaths of two suspects. The four victims—Carolyn Didia (42), Ego Odu (48), Apollonia Ezekwe (40), and Godwin Ezekwe (37)—were freed from captivity.
During the operation, two of the victims sustained bullet wounds from the kidnappers and were immediately rushed to Oforola Health Centre for medical attention. Fortunately, they are now in stable condition and recovering.
In addition to rescuing the hostages, police recovered critical items from the criminals, including one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a magazine.
Okoye emphasized that the swift response and coordination of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit played a crucial role in the success of the operation. Despite the challenges, the police were able to neutralize the threat and ensure the safety of the victims.
