A tragic incident unfolded in Awka, Anambra State, as suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” shot and killed an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), identified only as Salisu. Another officer sustained severe injuries during the operation.
According to Chronicles Reporters, the EFCC team was on a mission to arrest a group of suspected cybercriminals when the attack occurred early Friday morning. The operatives were reportedly dispatched from the EFCC Enugu Zonal Command to carry out a series of raids in Awka.
A reliable source disclosed that the team had successfully raided their first target, arresting several suspects and recovering items such as credit cards and four luxury vehicles. However, the operation took a grim turn as they moved to a second location.
“They arrived at the second location, which comprised several apartments. After instructing the gatekeeper to identify the suspect’s residence, the suspect refused to open the door, apparently fearing they might be robbers or kidnappers,” the source explained.
Despite identifying themselves as EFCC operatives, the suspect remained uncooperative. “When the operatives attempted to break into the apartment, the suspect opened fire, critically injuring Salisu and wounding another officer in the hand,” the source added.
The injured operatives immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Awka, only to find no doctors available. Two nurses advised them to seek help at a private hospital. At Amaco Hospital, the doctor on duty confirmed Salisu’s death and admitted the injured officer, but noted that treatment could not proceed without a blood transfusion.
A glaring issue highlighted by the incident was the lack of protective gear. “None of the EFCC operatives had bulletproof vests, only their branded EFCC jackets,” the source lamented.
The Anambra State Police Command has since confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated, “Investigations are ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details will be provided in due course.”
