Alexander Smirnov, a former informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday for fabricating a bribery story implicating President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

The fabricated claims, which became a focal point of Republican impeachment efforts, were later debunked. According to Associated Press, Smirnov had pleaded guilty last month to charges of tax evasion and lying to the FBI about a fraudulent bribery scheme. Prosecutors alleged that the false story was part of an effort to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Smirnov had falsely claimed that executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid the Bidens $5 million each in 2015. However, prosecutors revealed that his business dealings with Burisma began in 2017, well after Joe Biden’s tenure as vice president. The false allegations triggered significant controversy in Congress and were later dismissed by the Biden administration as a “political stunt.”

Special Counsel David Weiss condemned Smirnov’s actions in court, stating, “By committing these crimes, he betrayed the United States, a country that had shown him immense generosity, including granting him citizenship.” Weiss also noted that Smirnov’s actions were aimed at interfering in a presidential election.

Smirnov’s defense team had requested a reduced sentence of four years, citing his significant contributions as an FBI informant and his deteriorating health. They argued that a longer sentence would exacerbate his suffering. The defense also highlighted that both Hunter Biden and former President Trump had faced legal challenges without severe consequences.

Despite these arguments, the court imposed a six-year sentence, emphasizing the severity of Smirnov’s crimes.
