Apple has agreed to a $95 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit accusing the tech giant of secretly recording user conversations through its Siri voice assistant. The lawsuit, which has been ongoing for five years, was filed in a California federal court.

According to the plaintiffs, Siri-enabled devices captured private conversations without users intentionally activating them by saying “Hey, Siri.” Some of these recordings were allegedly shared with advertisers, raising significant privacy concerns. Chronicles Reporters notes that the settlement comes amidst Apple’s repeated assurances about prioritizing user privacy.

Although Apple denies any wrongdoing, the company decided to settle the case. The agreement still requires approval from U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, with a hearing scheduled for February 14 in Oakland, California.

If the settlement is approved, users who owned Siri-equipped devices between September 17, 2014, and 2023 could receive up to $20 per device, with claims capped at five devices per person. Additionally, the attorneys involved in the case are expected to request up to $29.6 million from the settlement fund to cover legal fees and expenses.
