The African Action Congress (AAC) in Anambra State has called on the Nigeria Police Force to improve the welfare of its personnel, citing the worsening security situation in the state.

In a press statement signed by Chioma Grace Ifemeludike, the AAC Chairperson in Anambra, the party criticized Governor Charles Soludo’s declaration of a state of emergency on insecurity, describing it as ineffective and merely political. The AAC alleged that the declaration has failed to yield tangible results in addressing the escalating violence and insecurity in the state.

The party further accused Governor Soludo of failing in his primary duty of ensuring the safety of lives and properties, holding him accountable for the increasing insecurity. It also condemned the police for alleged extortion and ineffectiveness in tackling security challenges.

The statement read: ā€œIn recent times, villages and communities in Anambra State have been invaded by unknown gunmen who have terrorized, oppressed, kidnapped, and even murdered innocent citizens. These criminals have caused immense suffering, disrupting the physical, financial, and emotional well-being of law-abiding residents.”

The AAC lamented the adverse effects of insecurity on businesses, describing how the once vibrant state, known for its nightlife and bustling commercial activities, has been crippled by fear. “The light of the nation now struggles with the darkness of insecurity,” the statement added.

The party expressed concern over recent reports of kidnappings, organ harvesting, and killings, calling it “an era of terror that must be confronted.” It urged the people of Anambra to unite against the menace ravaging their communities.

Additionally, the AAC criticized the Nigerian police for focusing on extorting money from public transport drivers at numerous checkpoints rather than addressing the insecurity. “Police officers on highways have become more concerned with illegal collections than safeguarding the lives of commuters, allowing criminals to operate freely under their watch,” the statement said.

The AAC called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Anambra State Commissioner of Police to improve the welfare of police officers, including better salaries and incentives. “It is dangerous to arm officers whose basic needs are neglected, leaving citizens at their mercy,” the party warned.

The party also urged Governor Soludo to take proactive steps in securing lives and properties, emphasizing that security is essential for economic growth and development in the state.

“We will not tolerate this assault on our people and our land,” the AAC declared. “We are prepared to use every tool at our disposal, from social media to street protests, to demand accountability and action from the authorities.”
