A 34-year-old man, Kamisu Haruna, has revealed how he narrowly escaped death while his friend tragically passed away after consuming poisoned food prepared by his 14-year-old bride, Zahra’u Dauda, just two days after their wedding. The incident took place on December 22 in Albasu village, located in the Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State, according to a report by Premium Times on January 4.
Haruna, who had wed Zahra’u on December 20 in Kiyawa Local Government Area, explained that after the wedding ceremony, he brought his bride home. Later that evening, after the guests had left, Zahra’u had her friends deliver food to him at around 10 p.m. Haruna shared the meal with two of his friends, Muhammad Alpha and Isyaku Adamu. However, as they ate, they noticed an unusual taste in the food, which they suspected to be chemicals. Soon after, they began to experience severe stomach pains.
“We were sitting at a nearby shop after the wedding guests had left. Suddenly, we saw Zahra’u’s friends approaching with food. As we ate, we tasted chemicals and stopped immediately. We started feeling ill and decided to take milk, but our condition worsened,” Haruna recounted. “We rushed to the hospital, but my friend, Muhammad Alpha, was declared dead upon arrival.”
Haruna denied allegations that he had forced Zahra’u into the marriage, insisting that his young wife genuinely loved him but had been misled by her previous partner due to her lack of experience and maturity.
Lawan Adam, the Jigawa police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured individuals were taken to the hospital, where Muhammad Alpha was tragically confirmed dead. The police are continuing their investigation into the case.
