The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a ban on the use of firecrackers, commonly known as knockouts, during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
This directive, aimed at ensuring public safety and safeguarding lives and property, was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh. According to Adeh, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, Olatunji Disu, emphasized that the ban is necessary to prevent panic and maintain peace during the holiday season.
“The use of firecrackers and fireworks often causes unnecessary alarm and anxiety within the city,” the statement read. “In addition, they pose significant risks, such as fire outbreaks and other preventable accidents.”
The police further warned that anyone caught selling or using firecrackers would face arrest and prosecution under the law. Residents and community leaders were urged to spread awareness about the dangers associated with these items.
The FCT Police Command also encouraged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or breaches of this directive through the emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938, and 07057337653.
“We appeal to everyone to celebrate responsibly and wish all residents a peaceful and joyous Christmas and New Year,” Adeh concluded.
