A high-ranking commander of the infamous Boko Haram terrorist group, identified as Isah Jafaru, also known as “Nabida,” has been apprehended in Ekiti State, South-West Nigeria. This arrest marks a significant breakthrough, achieved after several months of meticulous surveillance by undercover operatives.
Reports on Friday revealed that Nabida fled from the North-East, where the Nigerian Army’s intensified operations have displaced many insurgents. Security sources disclosed that Nabida, an expert in guerilla warfare and explosives, received advanced training in Algeria and Somalia. He is reportedly linked to numerous terrorist activities in the North-East and neighboring Chad.
A source expressed concern that Nabida might have been spearheading efforts to establish Boko Haram sleeper cells in the South West. “There is fear that Boko Haram has dormant cells in the South West. This individual is likely one of those orchestrating such plans. It’s a wake-up call. We can’t ascertain how many others remain undetected in this region,” the source stated.
The suspect was captured in Iloro Ekiti following a series of coordinated efforts by security operatives who monitored his suspicious movements. The spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti, SC Afolabi Tolulope, confirmed that preliminary investigations identified Nabida as a top-ranking Boko Haram member. Sources further revealed that he had recently relocated to Iloro Ekiti to oversee activities of group members dispersed across the state.
Dr. Sosina Paul, the NSCDC State Commandant, disclosed that the command’s Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Unit initiated investigations based on credible tips. The operation involved close collaboration with other security agencies. Dr. Sosina warned of the possibility that terrorists are attempting to regroup in the South West and reassured residents that the command remains committed to preventing any insurgent activities in Ekiti State.
The NSCDC plans to transfer Nabida to the Department of State Security Services (DSS) for further investigation. Dr. Sosina also urged traditional rulers and landowners to remain vigilant about individuals seeking to use forested or remote lands. He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities or persons to the nearest security agency without hesitation.
Similarly, the police have cautioned traditional rulers against leasing lands to individuals who might pose a security risk. The authorities emphasized the importance of safeguarding the peace and security of Ekiti State.
