Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called for the cancer centre at the National Hospital, Abuja (NHA), to be renamed in honour of Maryam Abacha. She made this appeal during the hospital’s 25th-anniversary celebration, themed “Celebrating 25 Years of Quality Services and Expert Care.”

According to Senator Tinubu, the establishment of the National Hospital was a product of Maryam Abacha’s vision and efforts. Renaming the cancer centre, she said, would be a fitting tribute to her contributions to healthcare development in Nigeria. Tinubu also commended the hospital for its remarkable impact on healthcare delivery in the country, particularly in training specialised medical personnel. She encouraged the staff and management to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence and the provision of quality care.

Professor Muhammed Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, reflected on the hospital’s evolution over the last 25 years. He noted how it has expanded from serving women and children to offering a broad spectrum of medical services. He also emphasised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to improving healthcare and ensuring the well-being of Nigerians.

The Chief Medical Director, Professor Mahmud Raji, highlighted the hospital’s strides toward financial independence. He revealed that the hospital has significantly reduced its reliance on government funding by increasing internally generated revenue.

Future plans for the National Hospital include the establishment of a world-class neurosciences institute and the construction of a presidential wing to enhance service delivery and infrastructure.
