The administration of President Bola Tinubu has officially lifted the five-year ban on mining activities in Zamfara State. This decision, announced on Sunday, marks the end of restrictions imposed during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2019.

The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, made the announcement in a statement, attributing the decision to significant improvements in security within the state. The ban, initially implemented to address the threats posed by banditry and Boko Haram insurgency, had restricted mining exploration in Zamfara and other northern states.

Alake stated, “After over five years of restrictions, I am pleased to announce the lifting of the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State, thanks to significant security improvements. This decision comes after recognizing the state’s vast mineral wealth, including gold, lithium, and copper, which can greatly benefit our national economy.”

The minister acknowledged that while the ban aimed to curb illegal mining and associated criminal activities, it inadvertently created opportunities for unregulated mining operations.

“With the lifting of the ban, I believe Zamfara’s mining sector can now contribute meaningfully to national revenue and enable better regulation of mining activities, combating illegal operations more effectively,” he explained.

Looking forward, Alake emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the mining industry. “By 2025, we plan to implement policies that will consolidate sector reforms and foster a more favorable environment for sustainable growth and investment,” he added.
