A violent clash erupted between residents of four villages in Bahubal Upazila, Habiganj, leaving over 100 people, including police officers, injured. The altercation, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a Tk 5 autorickshaw fare, unfolded on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Mouchak area, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Zahirul Islam of Bahubal Circle.
The Incident and Its Escalation
The conflict began as an argument between a man from Satparia village and another individual from Kabirpur village. This minor disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Residents from Bherakhal village aligned themselves with Kabirpur villagers, while those from Baharua village supported Satparia. This alliance led to a large-scale clash, with both sides wielding makeshift weapons.
Destruction and Traffic Chaos
The violent confrontation resulted in extensive damage as homes and shops on both sides were attacked, vandalized, looted, and set on fire. The altercation also caused severe traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. The gridlock persisted for hours as the clashes continued unabated.
Police Intervention and Injuries
Local law enforcement, including Bahubal police and officers from the Highway Police Station, eventually arrived at the scene to restore order. ASP Zahirul confirmed that the injured were transported to the Bahubal Upazila Health Complex and the Habiganj District Sadar Modern Hospital for treatment.
“The situation became uncontrollable when the residents of four villages joined the fight,” ASP Zahirul stated. “The four-hour clash left over 100 individuals, including law enforcement officers, injured, and disrupted highway traffic significantly.”
Current Situation
The authorities have since brought the situation under control, and normalcy has been restored to the affected areas. However, the aftermath of the violence remains visible in the damaged properties and shaken community.
