A tragic auto crash on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge at Ilubirin, inward Sura, has claimed one life, leaving four others hospitalized. The accident involved a J5 Ford bus with registration number FKJ 724 YC and a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number FKJ 746 YC, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

In a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. Taofiq revealed that with assistance from bystanders, LASTMA officials managed to rescue four victims from the crash. Unfortunately, one individual, trapped inside the J5 Ford bus loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the J5 Ford bus suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, leading to a collision with the truck. The four survivors were promptly taken to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for urgent medical care.

LASTMA’s rescue team worked swiftly to clear the scene, removing the wrecked vehicles and scattered goods to restore normal traffic flow on the bridge.

Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the importance of road safety, particularly during the festive season. He urged drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition, with a particular focus on the braking systems, before embarking on journeys.
