Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have captured a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, in Zamfara State. Wurgi is suspected of masterminding the killing of Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir of Sabon Birni in Sokoto State.
The arrest took place on December 14 at 10 p.m. in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State. Acting on intelligence reports, troops discovered Wurgi was receiving treatment at a local hospital for severe injuries sustained during a violent clash with a rival group. He reportedly had multiple cuts and gunshot wounds, which helped the troops locate and apprehend him.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, who confirmed the operation via his X account, two of Wurgi’s accomplices managed to escape. However, another individual, who assisted in transporting the suspect using a tricycle, was arrested during the operation.
Makama revealed that Wurgi played a significant role in the kidnapping and murder of the Sarkin Gobir, which followed failed ransom negotiations. The demands included cash payments and motorcycles. He added that Wurgi is an international arms smuggler and has familial ties with notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. Wurgi’s son, Sani Duna, is alleged to be Turji’s getaway biker, exposing a deeper connection within the criminal network.
In August, Chronicles Reporters reported that the terrorists behind Alhaji Bawa’s murder demanded a ransom of N60 million and five motorcycles in exchange for releasing the traditional ruler’s body for burial.
Bawa and his son were abducted in July at Kwanar Maharba while traveling from Sokoto to Sabon Birni, his hometown and the headquarters of Sabon Birni Local Government Area in Sokoto State. Initially, the kidnappers demanded an exorbitant ransom of N1 billion for their release.
A heartbreaking video of the late Sarkin Gobir circulated online, showing him recounting his ordeal in Hausa. In the video, he begged for help, describing the dire conditions he and his son were enduring in captivity. The footage also captured a gunman dictating what the victims should say, illustrating the pressure and fear they faced.
Despite his pleas, rescue efforts were unsuccessful, and the terrorists tragically killed him.
