The Anambra State Police Command has begun an investigation into the tragic killing of Mr. Fabian Osita Chinedu, a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. The incident occurred late on Monday night when unidentified gunmen attacked and shot Chinedu at Aroma Junction, a busy area in Awka, the state capital.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday. According to him, the assailants not only killed Chinedu but also fled with his vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Corolla, ash in color, with an Enugu State registration number, UWN 158 AS.

SP Ikenga urged the public to assist in the investigation, saying, “While we commiserate with his family, friends, and the Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, we are appealing to anyone with relevant information that could help our investigation to come forward.”

He further encouraged members of the public to report any sighting of the stolen vehicle or any abandoned car matching its description. Such reports can be made to the nearest police station or through the following numbers: 07039194332 (Command Control Room) and 08039334002 (SP Tochukwu Ikenga, PPRO).

Awka has recently experienced a surge in attacks by gunmen, particularly around Aroma Junction and Ifite, areas known for their bustling activity.

Eyewitnesses described the attackers’ activities as chaotic and terrifying, as they fired sporadically into the air, sending residents into a frenzy. The gunshots forced traders to shut down their shops while many fled for safety. Several key areas were reportedly targeted during the attack, including Book Foundation Junction, Ukwu Aki Bus Stop, “B” Bus Stop, Commissioners’ Quarters, and the Bamboo area.

The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the culprits and restore calm in the affected areas.
