The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has declared a three-day warning strike in Lagos State, set to begin next Wednesday and end on Friday. This decision comes in collaboration with other unions within the health sector. According to a letter dated December 5, 2024, and signed by NANNM’s Secretary, Oloruntoba Odumosu, the strike is scheduled to run from December 11 to December 13, 2024, as part of a unified effort to address ongoing issues in the sector.
NANNM criticized the Lagos State Government for its failure to implement the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustment for all health workers. The union stated, “The government’s selective approach of implementing the adjustment solely for doctors under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, while neglecting other health professionals, is unacceptable.”
Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), in a separate letter signed by its State Secretary, Kabiawu Kamaldeen, expressed frustration over the delayed implementation of the 25% CONHESS adjustment. The union called for collective action, urging members to prepare for the strike. “This notice serves as a clarion call for mobilisation and preparedness. Let us be resolute in this struggle for a fruitful outcome,” the statement read.
Other unions, including the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), also condemned the state government’s actions. JOHESU stated, “Despite the critical roles we play in ensuring quality healthcare delivery in Lagos State, the government appears indifferent to our legitimate demands. This divisive approach undermines the collective morale of health professionals.”
The unions plan to hold a joint congress on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to discuss strategies and plan the way forward.
Members have been urged to remain united, with MHWUN emphasizing, “All branches must stand together to push for the rightful implementation of the CONHESS adjustment for all health workers.”
The planned strike underscores the persistent grievances of health workers over salary inequalities and unmet promises by the government. The health sector’s collective demand for equitable treatment reflects their resolve to achieve fairness for all professionals.
