The Nigerian Army has apprehended four individuals suspected to be members of the Cameroonian Ambazonian rebel group. These individuals, notorious for arms trafficking in Nigeria, were arrested in Takum, Taraba State, for allegedly supplying firearms to bandits.
Chronicles Reporters gathered that the suspects were tracked down to a hotel in Takum and apprehended by troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army on December 18, 2024. According to the army, the suspects were engaged in exchanging firearms for cocoa with their Nigerian accomplices.
Captain Oni Olubodunde, spokesperson for the 6 Brigade, provided further details on Saturday. “On December 18, 2024, acting on credible intelligence, troops apprehended four suspected members of the Ambazonia rebel group at a hotel in Takum,” he said.
“During initial interrogation, the suspects admitted to being part of the rebel group involved in arms trafficking, exchanging firearms for cocoa with their Nigerian collaborators. Four mobile phones were recovered from the suspects, who are currently in custody for further investigation,” Olubodunde added.
In a separate operation based on actionable intelligence, troops stationed in the Natilde community of Bantaji district, Wukari Local Government Area, intercepted a truck with registration number WKR 66 BB, Taraba State. The vehicle was found transporting 19 vandalized pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
Olubodunde revealed that subsequent collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Wukari Division led to the recovery of an additional 11 pipes, bringing the total to 30. The recovered items have since been handed over to the NSCDC for further investigation and necessary action.
He reiterated the 6 Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and critical national infrastructure, urging the public to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to aid their operations.
