The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has described Nigeria’s justice system as weak and in need of urgent reform. Drawing a parallel to a person seeking medical help when ill, he emphasized that the country’s criminal justice system requires a revival.
At the 2024 Annual Lecture and Award Ceremony organized by the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), the IGP stressed that the police are not solely responsible for the flaws within the system. He acknowledged the challenges faced but reiterated the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to improve the justice system.
“We all must come together to perfect the criminal justice system. If this system works well, it will positively affect everyone,” Egbetokun stated. The IGP was represented by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, at the event.
Also addressing the gathering, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), spoke on the persistent problem of corruption in Nigeria, which he identified as a key factor hindering progress across various sectors, including the justice system.
“Corruption remains one of the most significant challenges, affecting policy-making, resource mobilization, and service delivery in Nigeria. At the ICPC, we have learned that combating corruption requires a multi-faceted approach,” said Aliyu.
He further emphasized that the country’s justice system faces several challenges, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and a lack of human resources. He also highlighted the widespread corruption in the justice sector, which includes bribery and influence peddling. Aliyu called for targeted anti-corruption measures to address these issues, particularly within the judiciary, where bribery remains prevalent among officials despite limited public interactions.
“Despite the challenges, there is hope for reform. But we must work collectively and proactively to ensure a justice system that serves all Nigerians equitably,” Aliyu concluded.
