Attorney Tope Temokun has clarified that his client, Dele Farotimi, currently detained since early December, did not instruct Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to pursue an apology or out-of-court settlement with legal luminary Afe Babalola (SAN) regarding an ongoing defamation case.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Temokun addressed the controversy surrounding Farotimi’s arrest and prosecution, which stemmed from allegations in his book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” implicating judicial corruption involving Afe Babalola.
Temokun explained that recent events, including Peter Obi’s visit to Farotimi at a correctional facility in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, as well as Obi’s subsequent visit to Afe Babalola, had caused confusion. He visited Farotimi to clarify matters and confirm his stance.
“I visited Mr. Dele Farotimi in a correctional service in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State yesterday afternoon for one purpose,” Temokun stated. “The visit of Mr. Peter Obi to Ado-Ekiti, his visit to Aare Afe Babalola, and subsequently to Mr. Dele Farotimi in prison created unclarities. People were not clear about the conditions for release or any discussions of apology.”
Farotimi, during the visit, reaffirmed his principles and dismissed any claims of seeking to negotiate or apologize. According to Temokun, Farotimi was adamant that his position was rooted in truth and justice. “He told me categorically, ‘If anybody joins others to believe that I have sent someone to beg or negotiate, I will be so disappointed,’” Temokun recounted.
Farotimi emphasized that he had no prior knowledge of Peter Obi’s meetings or intentions and maintained that his legal team and supporters should focus on ensuring justice. He further reiterated his confidence in the content of his book, stating that those opposing him are “fighting the truth.”
Temokun concluded that Farotimi remains resolute, believing he will “have the last laugh” as justice prevails.
