The Dangote Refinery has commenced the export of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to several African countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, Angola, and South Africa. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s bid to expand its footprint across the continent.

Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, shared this development during a meeting with members of the Japanese Business Community in Nigeria, led by Japan’s Ambassador-designate, Suzuki Hideo.

In a statement released on Sunday, Edwin revealed that the refinery is also exporting diesel and jet fuel to global markets, meeting international standards. While petrol is being exported to African countries, jet fuel is witnessing growing demand from Europe.

He highlighted that the refinery, conceived by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, is the world’s largest single-train refinery complex. Edwin expressed pride in the fact that the facility was designed and constructed by Nigerians using cutting-edge technology to serve the global market.

“Currently, we have a lot of Japanese equipment integrated into both the refinery and the fertilizer plant. There are numerous opportunities for collaboration as we consistently seek advanced technology in all our operations,” Edwin said. He added that even the cement plant laboratory is robotically operated, showcasing their commitment to technological innovation.

The Vice President also noted that the Dangote Petrochemical project is set to transform Nigeria’s downstream sector by attracting investment, creating jobs, increasing tax revenues, reducing foreign exchange outflows, and boosting the country’s Gross Domestic Product. He emphasized that by refining Africa’s crude oil locally, the Dangote Group aims to drive industrial development, job creation, and economic growth across the continent.

Edwin reiterated the global demand for the refinery’s petroleum products, especially its polypropylene segment, which will reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imports of this essential material used in packaging, textiles, and automotive manufacturing.

During a tour of the refinery, a Japanese delegation praised the facility, describing it as a groundbreaking achievement that showcases Nigeria’s technological progress. The delegation visited the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Petrochemicals, and Fertilizer facilities, applauding their advanced technology and the refinery’s role in cementing Nigeria’s position as Africa’s gateway.

Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organisation, remarked on the refinery’s scale and sophistication. “We had heard about the Dangote Refinery in the media, but seeing it firsthand has left us truly impressed by its vastness and innovation. It reflects Nigeria’s technological growth and its potential as a key player on the global stage,” he said.

Oku further stated that the refinery reinforces Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and serves as a remarkable introduction to the country for the international community.
