The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced plans to confiscate vehicles lacking registration numbers or displaying defaced or single number plates as part of efforts to tackle the rising menace of “one-chance” robberies.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, emphasized that strict measures will also be applied to vehicles using covered number plates or tinted glasses without proper authorization.
SP Adeh revealed that the command has reinforced its operations by deploying more personnel and equipment for patrols, stop-and-search activities, and surveillance across Abuja. The move aims to curb the surge in crimes linked to “one-chance” incidents and vehicle theft.
“The FCT Police Command is deploying additional personnel and equipment for patrols, stop-and-search operations, and surveillance across the Federal Capital Territory,” the statement noted. “This initiative targets the rising incidents of ‘one-chance’ crimes and car theft.”
The police spokesperson further explained that vehicles violating registration rules, such as those with no plates, single plates, or defaced ones, will be impounded. Covered number plates and unauthorized tinted glasses will also be dealt with in line with the law.
“While these measures may cause some inconvenience, they reflect our dedication to the safety of all FCT residents and our resolve to deter criminal activities targeting motorists and passengers,” she said.
Highlighting the impact of the recent operations, SP Adeh stated that stolen vehicles have been recovered, and several “one-chance” robbers have been apprehended. She called on residents to remain cooperative and comply with the regulations.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during these operations,” the statement continued. “Vehicle owners are advised to comply with all relevant rules. The FCT Police Command remains committed to ensuring a secure environment for everyone. Please report suspicious activities and cooperate with our officers to help us prioritize your safety.”
