The Nigerian government has begun releasing funds to cover unpaid salaries for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) across federal universities and to settle outstanding benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
This move comes as the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU launched an indefinite strike on Monday in protest of unpaid wages. In a statement released on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed that payments have started, with some NASU members already receiving their withheld salaries.
The statement read, âThe Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.â It also added, âAccording to the OAGF, the Federal Government has released funds for payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.â
The OAGF emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees, affirming that this funding release is a step towards supporting university staff and pensioners.
Earlier, SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim noted that senior university officialsâincluding vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrarsâhad gone without pay for four months. He stated that universities would remain closed until all pending payments are resolved.
