A Nigerian doctor has achieved a remarkable feat by transforming his passion for art into a world record for the largest solo drawing. Fola David-Tolaram’s massive artwork, created on the Mobolaji Johnson Arena pitch in Lagos, serves as a tribute to Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.

The artwork, titledĀ The Unity of Diversity, spans an astonishing 1,004.7 square meters (10,814.5 square feet), equivalent to about 3.8 tennis courts. It depicts a map of Nigeria, highlighting the unique elements of various ethnic groups. Fola, 31, explained, ā€œThe drawing is a map of Nigeria showcasing its diverse cultures. Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation, and I wanted this piece to give people a way to celebrate that diversity.ā€

Before starting his record-breaking drawing, Fola traveled across Nigeria, immersing himself in different cultural experiences that he later infused into the artwork. ā€œThe food, clothing, festivals, and instruments from each culture are all part of this piece,ā€ he shared.

The project required a 1,360-square-meter canvas, which took two days to assemble. Using waterproof markers, Fola began drawing from the center, initially planning a circular approach. However, as he progressed, he adapted his technique, sometimes pausing on challenging sections and shifting to easier areas before returning.

This artistic endeavor adds to Fola’s decade-long journey as a professional artist while practicing medicine. His accomplishment is a testament to the blend of passion and cultural pride.

Fola David-Tolaram, whose artwork has graced exhibitions worldwide, took on this monumental project to challenge his own artistic boundaries. He shared, ā€œI remember standing at the center of the vast canvas, just about to begin, and feeling an overwhelming mix of excitement and fear. Years of work and growth had all led to this moment.ā€

He paused for a few minutes, mentally preparing himself to start the daunting piece. ā€œFor those five minutes, I had to remind myself that I was ready, despite a voice inside asking, ā€˜Are you sure you’re prepared?’ I had to reassure myself that everything was set.ā€But as soon as he began, his confidence returned. ā€œStarting was all I needed. The moment my marker hit the canvas, all my apprehension faded,ā€ he recalled.

With each stroke, Fola reconnected with his skills and experience. ā€œAfter those initial lines, I remembered my journey, the knowledge I’d built, and my years as an artist. Everything flowed naturally from there,ā€ he added.

Over the six days it took to complete his colossal drawing, Fola David-Tolaram attracted a constant stream of visitors to the 5,000-seat Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Crowds gathered to support him, creating an ā€œelectrifyingā€ atmosphere that fueled his motivation.

Reflecting on his achievement, Fola said, ā€œHolding a Guinness World Records title is absolutely unbelievable. Growing up, I read about world records, but I never imagined I’d actually hold one myself.ā€ Still absorbing the enormity of his accomplishment, Fola added, ā€œI feel deeply honored, distinguished, and Officially Amazing.ā€
