The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed the fainting incident involving minors during their arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja, claiming it was a “staged reaction” intended to provoke a negative public response.

This statement, relayed through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, was released on Saturday. According to the statement, six of the detained minors allegedly fainted “in a deliberate and scripted manner” during the court session to attract media attention.

The police said that medical assistance was immediately provided to the fainted minors, emphasizing the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguard the welfare of individuals in custody, regardless of the charges they face.

Egbetokun highlighted the Force’s dedication to upholding justice while respecting individuals’ rights, including those of minors. He explained that Nigerian law holds individuals accountable once they reach the age of criminal responsibility. “The principle aligns with international standards where young people are held responsible for serious crimes,” he added, referencing practices in countries like the United Kingdom. However, he stressed that the police approach each case with empathy, ensuring respect for human rights.

The Inspector-General also stated that the minors are accused of causing damage to government property. He noted that recently, the Nigeria Police Force has arraigned 76 suspects on charges that include terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony. These allegations involve serious offences like the destruction of public assets and threats to national security. In handling their detention, Egbetokun said the police have strictly followed legal procedures to uphold fairness and accountability under the law.

The police report clarified that the suspects were formally charged in court, where a remand order was issued. The police said they balanced justice with compassion throughout the process, respecting each suspect’s basic rights, including access to medical care and essential provisions.

Egbetokun acknowledged the public’s interest in the case and assured that officers would maintain professionalism as the legal proceedings unfold. He urged the public to view the case objectively, affirming that the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to transparency, best practices, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity.
