Human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, has demanded an immediate investigation into allegations of extra-judicial killings linked to Wale Ajetunmobi, a suspended aide to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Effiong’s call followed revelations made by Ajetunmobi, who claimed that individuals accused of arson during the 2020 #EndSARS protests were trailed and executed.
Chronicles Reporters earlier reported that Governor Sanwo-Olu suspended Ajetunmobi, his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, after the controversial remarks on his X account (formerly Twitter). The suspension was announced on Tuesday in a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, citing misrepresentation of facts regarding the #EndSARS protests.
Effiong, reacting via his X handle, described Ajetunmobi’s confession as “deeply troubling” and called for swift action by the authorities. He stressed that suspension alone was inadequate and demanded that Ajetunmobi be immediately detained and questioned.
“Suspending Wale Ajetunmobi as your aide does not address the alarming confession of extra-judicial killings made by him,” Effiong wrote in an open letter to Governor Sanwo-Olu. “This matter has to be investigated thoroughly by law enforcement agencies. He should be taken into custody immediately.”
Effiong referenced Ajetunmobi’s claim that individuals involved in the arson attack on TVC News at CMD Road, Lagos, were tracked and executed. He urged the Lagos State Government and Police Command to clarify the situation, demanding answers about the suspects and the actions taken against them.
“Where are the suspects or persons arrested in connection with the arson? What are their names? Has anyone been charged with the arson committed at TVC station?” Effiong asked.
The activist highlighted the lack of information surrounding those accused of attacking the TVC News station and expressed concern over Ajetunmobi’s alleged revelations. “The public deserves to know the truth about these allegations. The silence on the fate of those accused of attacking TVC News is suspicious,” he said.
Effiong warned against allowing government officials or their allies to assume the roles of executioners. He emphasized that only the judiciary has the authority to determine guilt in criminal cases. “The judiciary is the sole constitutional authority empowered to determine the guilt of anyone accused of a crime,” he stated.
In a separate statement, the Lagos State Government condemned Ajetunmobi’s controversial post, describing it as a gross misrepresentation of facts. Akosile clarified that the government does not condone or associate itself with Ajetunmobi’s claims, reiterating the importance of professionalism in public communications.
The statement revealed that Ajetunmobi had claimed that most of those responsible for the arson during the #EndSARS protests were “hunted down and executed.” His remarks have sparked outrage, with many calling for a thorough investigation to establish the truth behind the claims.
Effiong concluded his statement by urging law enforcement and the Lagos State Government to act urgently, ensuring transparency and accountability. The public now awaits the government’s official response to the allegations.
