The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has provided details about the recent arrest of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, a well-known crossdresser in Nigeria. The arrest occurred on Thursday night at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where Bobrisky was attempting to board a flight to London amid ongoing bribery allegations.

Following his arrest, Bobrisky was transported from Lagos to Abuja for further questioning. Mr. Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest during a phone conversation with SaharaReporters on Friday morning. He stated that the crossdresser was taken into custody because he had disregarded a prior invitation to appear before the agency.

According to Mr. Oyewale, Bobrisky is implicated in allegations of bribery, and his arrest was necessary because he was evading the commission’s attempts to obtain information about officials he allegedly bribed. “We arrested him last night and moved him to Abuja as our investigative team is based there,” he explained. “He was trying to evade mentioning the names of those who he claimed accepted bribes from him. Despite our invitations, he did not show up and attempted to leave the country.”

When asked whether Bobrisky would face bribery charges, Mr. Oyewale indicated that he currently had no information on that front.

This is not the first time Bobrisky has faced legal issues; in October, he was arrested while attempting to escape to the Benin Republic. His earlier arrest occurred at the Seme border when customs officials conducted a routine passport check just hours before he was set to appear before a Senate inquiry regarding allegations against him.
