Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended two key commissioners amid allegations of government material diversion. The suspended officials include Moses Ekuma, the Commissioner for Health, and Francis Ori, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development.
The action follows an incident on Saturday night when Governor Nwifuru visited the Ministry of Health’s premises and reportedly discovered six officials involved in the diversion of government materials. The governor swiftly ordered their arrest and pledged to pursue full prosecution.
The decision to suspend the two commissioners was made during the State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Monday. A statement from Jude Okpor, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, confirmed the suspensions, which have ignited discussions about transparency and accountability in the state’s administration.
The statement reads, “In light of cases of gross misconduct and neglect of duties by certain government officials, the Chairman of Council has directed the indefinite suspension of the Honourable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, as well as a three-month suspension for the Honourable Commissioner for Health.”
