In a fierce confrontation, fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram clashed with troops of the Nigerian Army, resulting in the death of three soldiers in Borno State.

The soldiers, deployed from Sector 3 of the Nigerian Army under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), were killed on Monday during an intense gun battle in the Kukawa and Monguno areas of the state.

In a statement released on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Chief Military Information Officer at the MNJTF headquarters in N’djamena, Chad, confirmed the incident. He noted that despite the casualties, the troops inflicted significant losses on the insurgents.

“The operation led to the elimination of terrorists and the recovery of valuable assets,” Osoba stated.

He explained that the attackers employed suicide Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) but were overpowered by the MNJTF’s superior firepower. “Following intense air and artillery bombardments, coupled with ground assault, five terrorists were neutralized, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.”

The operation also saw military air assets destroying three VBIEDs. Troops seized 40 motorcycles equipped with assorted weapons, four anti-aircraft guns, and a rocket-propelled grenade.

Regrettably, three soldiers lost their lives in the operation. Osoba emphasized that this bold effort reflects the MNJTF’s steadfast commitment to combating terrorism and safeguarding lives in the Lake Chad region.
