A coalition of youth organizations is urging the Nigerian Senate to remove Senator Shehu Umar Buba from his position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence due to allegations that he has aided bandits.

Senator Buba, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represents the Bauchi South Senatorial District in the Senate. The coalition is demanding a thorough investigation into his alleged connections to banditry.

In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the group emphasized that it would be inappropriate for Senator Buba to hold a leadership position in security matters while under investigation for terrorism-related allegations.

The coalition noted that the Bauchi State government has already requested President Bola Tinubu to initiate an inquiry into the claims against Buba.

The letter, which was reviewed by SaharaReporters, states: “We write on behalf of the National Coalition of Youth Groups, a network of concerned Nigerian youths dedicated to promoting national peace, security, and good governance. We are deeply disturbed by recent allegations linking Senator Shehu Umar Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, with banditry.”

It continues, “Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has formally urged President Bola Tinubu to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation into these serious allegations. Given the gravity of these claims—particularly at a time when banditry and kidnapping pose significant national security threats—it is vital that these allegations be fully investigated, regardless of who is involved.”

The coalition highlights the devastating impact of banditry in northern Nigeria, stating, “The insecurity caused by these acts has led to numerous fatalities, displacing thousands and crippling economic activities, especially in Bauchi State. Should any public official, particularly a Senator, be found complicit in these crimes, it would undermine public trust in the National Assembly and jeopardize national security.”

In their request, the coalition implores the Senate President to initiate an immediate and impartial investigation into the allegations. They emphasize that justice must be served and perceived to be served, adding, “We also call on Senator Shehu Umar Buba to step down as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence during this investigation to ensure impartiality.”

The letter concludes by asserting that national security is paramount and that no individual should be above the law. “The National Assembly must uphold its integrity and accountability, particularly regarding national security matters.”

The correspondence was signed by Bashir Garba Zamfara, President of the Coalition, and Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe, the group’s Secretary. It was also copied to President Tinubu, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector General of Police, and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.
