A woman identified as Miss Ijeoma Franca has been apprehended while attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Medium Security Prisons in Kuje, Abuja. The illicit substance was hidden inside a carton of biscuits and was discovered during a routine search by prison officers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Federal Capital Territory Prison Command spokesperson, Humphery Chukwuedo, explained that the suspect claimed, during interrogation, that she had been asked by a man named Daniel to deliver the package to his brother, Miracle Amechi, who is currently an inmate at Kuje Prison.

“Franca stated that Daniel engaged her to deliver the package to Mr. Miracle Amechi, an inmate at Kuje Prison, and that the package contained a carton of spicy biscuits, rolls of milk and Milo, shirts, and ₦2500. She claimed she was unaware of the real contents inside the biscuit carton,” Chukwuedo revealed.

Following her arrest, Miss Franca was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Controller of Prisons for the FCT Command, Sylvester Nwakuche, issued a stern warning to visitors, urging them to refrain from smuggling hard drugs into the prison. He emphasized that drug use among inmates compromises their rehabilitation and reformation, while also negatively impacting their health.

Nwakuche called on the public to support the efforts of the prison authorities, led by Controller-General of Prisons, Ahmed Jafaru, to ensure that the objectives of imprisonment are fulfilled, contributing to a safer and healthier society.
