The local government election in Akwa Ibom State has faced significant challenges, including widespread voter apathy and delays in the arrival of election materials.
Polling is currently underway across the state’s three senatorial districts, where residents are voting for local government chairmen and councillors. However, reports indicate that as of 10:30 AM, many polling units had yet to receive the necessary election materials, contributing to a lack of enthusiasm among voters.
At Unit 7, Ward 12 in the Itu Local Government Area, few voters were seen waiting for the arrival of materials from the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC). This situation was mirrored across several other polling locations, such as Unit 2, Ward 11 in Itu and Unit 007, Ward 14 in Uyo.
Mrs. Rita Archibong, an agent for the Peoples Democratic Party, noted that at Unit 001, Ward 14 in Uyo, accreditation had not commenced due to the absence of election materials. She stated, “We are still waiting for election materials from the AKISIEC office, so accreditation has not started.”
As of now, AKISIEC has not released an official statement regarding the delays in material distribution at polling units. This issue of late arrivals, alongside the evident reluctance of voters to engage in the electoral process, continues to plague elections in Nigeria.
