The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended Dr. Joseph Idung from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology over serious allegations of misconduct. This decision comes in the wake of claims that Dr. Idung failed to return funds collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

The Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, confirmed the suspension through a formal letter sent to Dr. Idung on Monday. Reports indicate that he did not return the money that was supposed to support the induction process for students.

This suspension marks the second disciplinary action taken by the university within a week, following the dismissal of Dr. Joseph Akpan, who served as the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology. Dr. Akpan was found guilty of tampering with examination scores for a course on antimicrobial pharmacology, as determined by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC). His suspension became effective on October 8, 2024.

Registrar Egbe expressed the administration’s dismay regarding Dr. Idung’s refusal to refund the allegedly collected funds. He stated, “The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, has mandated his suspension from all university responsibilities to allow for a thorough investigation by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU).”

Additionally, Dr. Idung has been ordered to return any university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and is prohibited from entering the campus unless summoned by the ACTU. During the suspension, the Bursar has been instructed to place Dr. Idung on half salary.
