Stephen Abuwatseya, a driver, recorded an encounter with Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member for Aba North and Aba South in Abia State, at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja. Abuwatseya shared the video online on Sunday, quickly drawing public attention.
In response to the incident, Hon. Ikwechegh issued a public apology, admitting that his actions did not meet the standards expected of a public official. “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry,” he expressed.
Ikwechegh apologized for any harm and embarrassment caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public. He assured that he was cooperating with the Nigerian Police in their investigation to ensure accountability. “I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently. A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behavior towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official,” he stated.
Furthermore, Ikwechegh highlighted his commitment to self-improvement and accountability. He shared that he is seeking professional counseling to prevent a recurrence and plans to participate in community service initiatives that promote respect and empathy.
He also called on Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect and tolerance. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he concluded, expressing hope for collective growth and understanding in the wake of the incident.
