The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has announced that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has not yet released funds to facilitate the recently approved increase of the monthly allowance for corps members to N77,000.

This information was shared in a press release from the NYSC Edo State Secretariat on Thursday, clarifying that the delay in implementing the increased allowance is due to the government’s failure to disburse the necessary funds.

In September, the Nigerian government approved the hike in the NYSC monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. However, it was reported that corps members received the old allowance of N33,000 for September, despite the recent approval.

This situation has led to disappointment among many corps members, as revealed through discussions with serving members by SaharaReporters.

In response to the public outcry, the NYSC stated, “The Federal Government has not yet released the promised increment in the personal allowance to corps members.” They assured that arrears would be credited to corps members’ accounts starting in July 2024, emphasizing that the 2023 Batch C corps members would receive all their entitlements.

The statement further clarified, “We would like to inform corps members and the general public, particularly our stakeholders, that the payment for their role as ad-hoc staff in the recent gubernatorial election in Edo State is solely the responsibility of INEC, not NYSC management.”

The NYSC also sought to dispel rumors suggesting that it had intentionally withheld the allowance. “We are making every effort to ensure that the responsible institution pays the affected corps members as soon as possible. We urge our corps members and stakeholders to continue exercising patience and understanding,” the statement concluded.
