The administration of President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to officially commence the long-awaited 1,000km Sokoto-Badagry highway project, which has remained neglected since its inception in 1976.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made this announcement during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday. He emphasized that the project was originally initiated during Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure as Head of State but was never completed. The current government is now focused on bringing it back to life.

Onanuga stated, “The 1,000km Sokoto-Badagry highway project will kick off next week. This project aims to enhance connectivity in that region.” He further explained, “The idea for this highway dates back to 1976, during Obasanjo’s administration, but it was subsequently left unfinished. This government is determined to revive it.”

In July, Minister of Works Engineer Nweze David Umahi indicated that the project would be inaugurated in Kebbi State by President Tinubu, with an initial focus on the 258km segment in that area. He underscored the historical significance of the highway, noting that it follows one of the oldest trans-Sahara trade routes, a vision that has not been realized until now under Tinubu’s leadership.

With the project finally set to launch, there is hope for significant economic development and improved transportation infrastructure in the region.
