In a continued effort to enhance content moderation and create a safer environment for its users, TikTok has reported the removal of 2.1 million videos in Nigeria. The short-form video platform took this action due to violations of its community guidelines during the second quarter of 2024.
The recently released Community Guidelines Enforcement Report indicated that these removed videos accounted for less than 1% of the total uploads from Nigeria during the period under review.
The report also revealed that 99.1% of the videos were proactively taken down before any users flagged them, and 90.7% were removed within 24 hours of being identified. This data underscores TikTok’s proactive stance on curbing harmful content and ensuring a safer platform for its Nigerian user base.
TikTok further emphasized its commitment to investing in new technologies to enhance content moderation efforts. The platform aims to manage potential risks while reinforcing its dedication to transparency and safety for its diverse user community, both in Nigeria and around the world.
This large-scale content removal was not limited to Nigeria alone. TikTok confirmed that, globally, it had taken down over 178 million videos in June 2024. Out of these, 144 million removals were handled by automated systems.
The platform also boasted an improved global proactive detection rate, now at 98.2%, showing its growing efficiency in addressing harmful content before users come across it.
TikTok, owned by the global company ByteDance, continues to work on safeguarding its platform for users worldwide.
