A tragic incident has unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, where a student known as Ariyo has died after enduring a severe punishment from a teacher. According to activist Adetoun, who shared the story on Instagram, Ariyo received what was reported to be 162 strokes of the cane for allegedly damaging a dustbin.
It is said that the teacher had brought a dustbin into Ariyoβs classroom, instructing students to refrain from breaking it. When Ariyo jokingly remarked that the dustbin had been purchased with their collective money, the teacher reportedly became enraged. Following this altercation, the teacher reported the incident to the principal, who then ordered Ariyo to be punished.
Carrying out the principalβs directive, the teacher is accused of administering 162 strokes of the cane. During this punishment, Ariyo collapsed. Adetoun claims that both the teacher and other staff members at the school hesitated to transport the unconscious student to the hospital. By the time they sought medical help, it was too late, and Ariyo was pronounced dead.
A senior police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the occurrence of this incident but indicated that they were not authorized to disclose further details. They noted that the event caused significant unrest in the community, although police intervention helped to alleviate the situation. βWe are monitoring the situation closely; it had the potential to escalate, but we managed to calm things down,β the officer stated.
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, provided further clarification about the incident on Friday. She stated that contrary to initial reports claiming 162 strokes of the cane were administered, the student was actually made to perform 162 frog jumps and received 24 strokes of the cane. The incident reportedly took place on October 15, 2024. Odutola confirmed that Ariyo was transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 25. His body has been taken to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
