A fully loaded tanker transporting black oil experienced a brake failure on Sunday, resulting in a catastrophic multi-vehicle accident that left three people dead.

The incident took place around 6:00 PM at Second Rainbow, heading towards Mile 2 on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, according to a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA.

The tanker collided with two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda vehicle, registered as KTU 223 GH, which led to the fatalities. All three victims were passengers in one of the Volkswagen buses and tragically died at the scene.

In response to the emergency, LASTMA officers quickly arrived to manage the situation. The agency coordinated with security personnel from the Festac Police Station to establish a secure perimeter for ongoing emergency operations. One family member was present to take custody of one of the deceased.

Additional emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire Services and LASMBUS, were also on site to assist.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. He emphasized the importance of road safety, particularly for tanker drivers who must adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety while handling hazardous materials.

“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate loss of life. It is crucial for all drivers, especially those in heavy-duty vehicles, to remain vigilant and cautious at all times,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.
