The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu has confirmed the tragic passing of Chiamaka Ozoigbondu, a student from Peaceland College, due to a road accident on campus this past Monday. The news was made public in a statement by the Acting Rector, Dr. Emeka Ejim, on Wednesday. He also noted that two other students were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Dr. Ejim expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and all those impacted by this heartbreaking event. “We hope that such an incident does not happen again,” he remarked.
In light of the tragedy, the school’s Management and Academic Board held an emergency meeting and decided to suspend all ongoing examinations. Ejim announced a three-day mourning period from October 2 to October 3, during which staff and students are expected to reflect on Ozoigbondu’s life.
To ensure justice, the IMT management will work with security agencies and the grieving family. Ejim emphasized that celebrations on campus following exams would be prohibited. Students wishing to celebrate can do so off-campus.
He warned that any student found celebrating within IMT grounds could face expulsion, stating that “no amount of pressure will change this decision.”
To enhance safety, Ejim announced that the maximum speed limit for vehicles on campus will be set at 20 km/h. Drivers exceeding this limit will be reported to law enforcement. He also specified that law enforcement officers should not escort students onto the IMT grounds, as their presence complicates security management.
Future examinations will be conducted with heightened supervision, requiring students to wear their departmental uniforms and ID cards. Additionally, all students will be required to sign a code of conduct to maintain good behavior, and a system to check passes at the gate will be strictly enforced.
