Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has joined the ongoing #FearlessInOctober protests in Lagos, aimed at addressing issues of hunger and poor governance. As a former presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), Sowore has taken a prominent role, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters detained during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in August, as well as those arrested during the #EndSARS movement since 2020.

Additionally, Sowore called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He emphasized that these protests represent a struggle for a new form of independence, criticizing current leaders for their failure to improve the lives of Nigerians. “They have deliberately made life miserable for our people. The looters are everywhere,” he stated, asserting that this movement marks the beginning of a new fight for freedom.

“This is a continuation of what we began in 2019 with #RevolutionNow,” he said, underscoring the belief that only a revolution can bring about real change. Sowore added, “We are demanding the release of everyone detained in various states, including Kaduna, Abuja, Katsina, and Kano. If they are not released by the end of today, we will announce our next steps.”

Sowore emphasized the importance of freeing those wrongfully detained on charges, including treason, which he described as unjust. He also reiterated his support for Kanu, arguing that he is being persecuted for advocating for his people’s right to self-determination. “People have the right to choose whether to stay in Nigeria or leave. We don’t want to prevent anyone from making that choice.”

Criticizing Nigeria’s current state, Sowore labeled the country’s independence as a barrier to progress, referring to it as a form of “internal colonialism.” He remarked, “The independence granted in 1960 has become a burden for Nigerians. What we received was flag independence, not true freedom, leading us from colonial rule to internal oppression.”

Sowore urged Nigerians to engage in actions that will lead to genuine independence, stating, “Today marks the beginning of our fight for real independence. A revolution is necessary to free Nigerians from the chains imposed by our leaders.”
