Authorities in the United States have confirmed multiple fatalities following a helicopter crash in Houston on Sunday night. The tragic accident occurred when the helicopter collided with a radio tower, resulting in a devastating fire.
At a press conference, Chief J. Noe Diaz, a senior police officer, revealed that four people were aboard the helicopter, including a child. He confirmed that several people lost their lives in the crash.
The incident happened in the Second Ward neighborhood of Houston, igniting a fire that spread across three blocks, according to officials. NBC News reported that the crash took place at approximately 7:54 p.m. local time.
Initial reports from the Houston Fire Department indicated that the helicopter struck the radio tower before bursting into flames. Fortunately, nearby businesses were closed at the time, which helped to limit the potential for additional casualties.
Authorities have yet to release the names of those who were on board. Both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are set to launch a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.
Chief Diaz also noted that the helicopter, identified as a Robinson R44, had taken off from Ellington Field, though its intended destination remains unclear. He added that local businesses near the crash site have been disrupted, but it is still unknown if anyone on the ground was injured.
