A bold kidnapping attempt targeting the family of Dr. Leon Usigbe, the Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, was successfully interrupted by security agents in Nasarawa State.
The incident unfolded around 12:50 a.m. on Monday at Dr. Usigbe’s home on Kurape Road in Karshi, a locality close to the Federal Capital Territory. According to reliable sources, an intruder managed to scale the perimeter fence and unlock the gate, allowing accomplices to enter the premises.
Once inside, the assailants vandalized windows with stones and tried to break into both the front and back doors but were ultimately unsuccessful. During the incident, one vigilante, who was guarding the neighborhood, sustained injuries from gunfire exchanged with the attackers.
At the time of the attempted kidnapping, Dr. Usigbe was not home, but his wife and children were present. The Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrived on the scene shortly after the attack began and engaged in a shootout with the gunmen, who fled the area.
DSP Ramhan Nansel, spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Monday. He noted, “There have been numerous reports of threats and insecurity in the area, prompting the Commissioner of Police to deploy the anti-kidnapping squad to respond. The squad arrived at the scene shortly after hearing gunfire around 12:30 a.m. on Monday.”
