Alhaji Dahiru Zungeru, the Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland in Oyo State, has been suspended by the Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers in 17 southern states, reportedly over allegations of insubordination.
This decision follows Zungeru’s recent action to dethrone Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin as Sarkin Sasa for a similar accusation. However, the council, led by Maiyasin, held a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, declaring Zungeru’s removal of Sarkin Sasa as invalid.
Alhaji Suleiman Rabiu, the Sarkin Hausawa of Amuwo Odofin, stated that Zungeru’s group lacked the constitutional authority to dethrone Maiyasin, leading to the decision for Zungeru’s indefinite suspension.
Maiyasin condemned Zungeru’s move as both an affront and a personal attack, highlighting his role as Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers of Arewa communities across 17 southern states.
He emphasized that reputable bodies had appointed him to his current positions and affirmed that their authority superseded any claims made by Zungeru.
“It is well-documented that the institution which appointed me as Chairman of Arewa Traditional Rulers in the 17 southern states, as well as Sarkin Sasa in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, holds significant credibility and recognition,” Maiyasin stated. “If these institutions have not found any cause for my suspension or removal, Alhaji Dahiru Ali Zungeru does not possess the authority to make such decisions.”
