The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has cautioned the House of Representatives against dismissing the assault case involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, allegedly attacked by Representative Alex Ikwechegh.
RULAAC, a human rights advocacy organization, released this warning in a statement by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, on Wednesday.
Nwanguma described the incident involving Ikwechegh as a disturbing example of power misuse within Nigeria’s political system. He noted that the assault, both verbal and physical, highlights a serious lack of respect and humility from an individual holding public office.
He added, “The actions of Ikwechegh not only bring shame upon him as a lawmaker but also cast a negative shadow over the House of Representatives, the police, and Nigeria’s political environment.”
He further stressed that the misuse of authority to silence ordinary citizens reflects a worrying trend among public officials who appear to operate without accountability.
“The police’s apparent indifference to the case raises questions about their commitment to justice, as they seem more inclined to protect influential figures than to uphold the law,” Nwanguma stated.
Nwanguma also acknowledged that the House of Representatives’ decision to investigate the matter is a step forward but expressed doubt about whether it will result in genuine accountability.
He emphasized that past cases have shown a tendency for issues like this to fade away after public outrage diminishes, which would only damage public confidence in the government further.
“This case represents more than an individual dispute; it highlights a culture of impunity that must be confronted. Justice is not only owed to Mr. Abuwatseya but to countless other citizens who have faced similar mistreatment,” he noted.
Nwanguma concluded, “A fair outcome here would signal a commitment to integrity and accountability in public office, moving Nigeria toward a society that upholds human rights and the rule of law. This case should act as a turning point, promoting reforms that value and protect the rights of every Nigerian.”
