Protests broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, creating a tense atmosphere ahead of the Local Government elections set for October 5, 2024.
A large crowd of demonstrators gathered at the party’s headquarters, prompting security personnel to intervene to manage the situation and alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity, according to reports from Channels Television.
The protests were fueled by frustrations surrounding the delay in the release of the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
Earlier reports from The PUNCH highlighted a recent court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which prevented INEC from issuing the voters’ register to RSIEC amid ongoing legal disputes. Despite this ruling, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has insisted that the elections will proceed as scheduled.
Fubara expressed confidence in the Supreme Court’s earlier decision that mandated all states must have democratically elected local government officials, reinforcing his belief that the elections should continue as planned.
