Alex Ikwechegh, representing Abia State in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has been granted bail set at N500,000 by the Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja. This decision follows accusations of assault against a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in an incident that was reportedly captured on camera.

The court proceedings, held on Wednesday, saw Ikwechegh facing three charges: abuse of office, assault, and threats to life. These charges were filed by the office of the Inspector-General of Police, and the session was overseen by His Worship Abubakar Umar Sai’id.

During the hearing, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer promptly submitted an oral bail application, which the presiding judge accepted. The court set the bail terms at N500,000, with two sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills to confirm their residence.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 8.
